The NHS Five Year Forward View

The NHS Five Year Forward View sets out a clear direction for the NHS showing why change is needed and what it will look like. Some of what is needed can be brought about by the NHS itself. Other actions require new partnerships with local communities, local authorities and employers.

5year Forward Plan

The NHS recognizes that it needs to adapt to take advantage of the opportunities that science and technology offer patients, carers and those who serve them. But it also needs to evolve to meet new challenges. These changes mean that a longer view is needed – a Five-Year Forward View – to consider the possible futures on offer, and the choices that are available. So this Forward View sets out how the health service needs to change, arguing for a more engaged relationship with patients carers and citizens so that wellbeing and prevention of ill-health may be promoted.

It represents the shared view of the NHS national leadership, and reflects an emerging consensus amongst patient groups, clinicians, local communities and frontline NHS leaders. It sets out a vision of a better NHS, the steps that should be taken now take to get us there, and the actions we need from others.
